Bad Book, Good Book

I just finished another book. This time one by well-known author Nicholas Sparks. Most people know Sparks from his books that have been made into movies, such as The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe, and god help us, the Miley Cyrus movie The Last Song. I've read a fair amount of his books, and they are typically all the same - Flawed man meets flawed woman, they fall in love and then their relationship either works out despite the incredible odds or ends tragically. The latest book of his that I've read is called True Believer

It's pretty much the same formula stated above, but this time WRITTEN HORRIBLY. It was awful. The plot revolves around a New Yorker trying to debunk a supernatural mystery in a small town, where he meets and falls in love with the librarian. This could have been ok if the characters were interesting or the writing wasn't so amateurish. Instead, I feel like I've wasted 3-4 days of valuable reading time.

Oh well. I'm on to bigger and better things.

I am about 60 pages into Sarah's Key and it is SO GOOD! I can already tell that I'm going to recommend this book to everyone, so start reading it now so I have someone to talk to about it!

  1. Looks like the Sarah and her friend are in Paris, yea? Sorry to hear about the last book. Do you ever quit reading a book because you hate it? Or do you push yourself to finish?

  2. SJ - You're right about Paris. And I've quit a book before finishing but it's only happened a handful of times in my life. Usually I keep reading, hoping the train wreck story will eventually be worthwhile.

  3. I almost bought the "Bad Book" but I didn't. I never know what to buy for a book so I may have to get Sarah's Key. Do you think I would like it? Very jealous about the flowers...Paul should teach Alex a few things! Any word on Paul being able to come to the States. I hope soon! I miss you and am penciling in Bismarck trip the weekend in Sept that you will be there!

  4. Brit - You will really like Sarah's Key. It's one of those books that pretty much anyone with a heart will enjoy reading (ok maybe that is extreme...) even though it is depressing at times. There still hasn't been much progress made on Paul's visa application. Slow going to say the least. Can't wait to see you in sept!
