Dog Fever

For the past month I have had serious doggy fever. (This is not to be confused with baby fever!) I look at our local humane society website at least 3 times a week to see what dogs are available and from the pictures and descriptions I imagine which dog I would pick if I was to take one home.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love Kobe to pieces. But as some of you know he recently tore both of his hindleg ACL's in his knees and currently can only walk about 100 feet before he starts to limp from the pain. He already had one knee surgery and has an appointment on Friday with a specialist in Spokane for his other knee. These surgeries may do the trick and Kobe might be good as new afterwards. But in the meantime I really miss a dog who can go on walks, especially now that summer is right around the corner. Last summer Kobe and I would take lots of walks by the lake and we would also go hiking together; both are now out of the question for him.

Paul says I want to replace Kobe but this isn't the case. I would rather have Kobe than any other dog for the rest of my life if I could, but why only have one dog if you have the means, the space, and the heart to have two? There are so many dogs that need homes that I wonder if we should add another one to our family.

Here are the dogs currently at the Spokane Humane Society that have caught my eye:

This is Kudor. Stupid name but she is so cute! She is a pit bull terrier mix, is 2 years old, and is already house-trained. Bonus!

Next we have Caesar, who is a German Shepard and Greyhound cross. He's medium sized, 4 years old, and also house-trained!

And lastly there is Bandit. He is a German Shepard and smooth Collie cross and looks like he would be fun to play frisbee with. He's 2 and also house-trained.

Every week there is another round of dogs that steal my heart. I'm sure if I went to the actual Humane Society I would find a dog that I would want to take home. That's precisely why I haven't set foot through those doors! Maybe once summer gets closer Paul and I will start seriously considering getting another dog, especially since by then Kobe will have had his second surgery and we will know how active he can be.

I will keep you posted! What do you guys think? Which of these three dogs would you pick?

  1. They are all adorable! I would go with Bandit. I love German Shepards. They have lots of health problems but mixed with a Collie (generally healthy) you would have a heck of a dog! So smart I bet!

I say get another dog for sure! There are so many that need homes! But perhaps wait until Kobe is strong enough to feel confident around another dog. He may feel intimidated by a new dog if he is injured. Make sure he is feeling good and happy before you introduce a new dog into the household. It is only fair to both of them!

Can't wait to see what you bring home! :) I had puppy fever big time before we got Rudy. It was the perfect time for us to get another dog and she is a great fit...although I just ran around the block looking for her cuz I thought she got out. Turns out she was just in the porch area of our house. I wanted to kill her...it is -8 outside.
